How This Calculator Works
The salary comparison calculator uses real cost-of-living data from the US Census Bureau American Community Survey. It compares the relative cost of housing (rent and home values) between two cities to estimate what salary you'd need in the target city to maintain the same standard of living.
For example, if rent is 30% higher in the target city, you'd need roughly 30% more salary to maintain the same housing-to-income ratio. The calculation weights rent (60%) and home values (40%) to create a composite cost index.
